Colonial Era

The colonial era in American history began with the establishment of the first permanent English settlement at Jamestown, Virginia in 1607. Over the next century and a half, thirteen colonies were established along the Atlantic coast. These colonies were governed by Great Britain, but they had a great deal of autonomy.

The colonial era was a time of great economic and social change. The colonies developed a thriving agricultural economy, and they also became major centers of trade and commerce. The population of the colonies grew rapidly, and new cities and towns were founded.

The colonial era was also a time of great intellectual and religious ferment. The colonists were influenced by the Enlightenment, and they began to develop their own unique political and religious ideas. The Great Awakening, a religious revival that swept through the colonies in the mid-18th century, had a profound impact on American society.

Revolution

The American Revolution began in 1775 with the Battle of Lexington and Concord. The colonists were fighting for their independence from Great Britain. The war lasted for seven years, and the colonists eventually won their independence with the Treaty of Paris in 1783.

The American Revolution was a major turning point in American history. It established the United States as a new nation, and it also had a profound impact on the world. The revolution inspired other colonies to fight for their independence, and it also helped to spread the ideals of democracy and liberty.

Early Republic

The early republic was a time of great growth and change for the United States. The new nation expanded westward, and it also began to develop its own unique political and economic system. The Constitution, which was adopted in 1789, established a strong central government and guaranteed the rights of individual citizens.

The early republic was also a time of great social and cultural change. The United States became a melting pot of different cultures, and new forms of art and literature began to emerge.

The colonial era, the revolution, and the early republic were all important periods in American history. These periods laid the foundation for the United States that we know today. If you're preparing for the History of the United States CLEP test, it's important to have a strong understanding of these periods.

In part 2 of this study guide, we'll cover the antebellum period, the Civil War, and Reconstruction. Stay tuned!
