The Battle for Camelot is a 1979 musical film directed by Joshua Logan and starring Richard Harris, Vanessa Redgrave, and Franco Nero. The film is based on the 1960 Broadway musical of the same name by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe, which in turn is based on the Arthurian legend.

The film tells the story of King Arthur (Harris) and his knights of the Round Table, who are struggling to maintain their kingdom in the face of the evil machinations of Mordred (Nero). Mordred is aided by Morgan le Fay (Redgrave),a powerful sorceress who is determined to destroy Arthur and his kingdom.

The Battle for Camelot is a lavishly produced film with stunning visuals and memorable songs. However, the film was a critical and commercial failure upon its release, and it is now largely forgotten.

Plot

The film opens with Arthur and his knights returning to Camelot after a successful battle against the Saxons. Arthur is greeted by Guinevere (Nicola Pagett),his beautiful wife, and Merlin (David Hemmings),his wise and powerful wizard.

Arthur is troubled by a dream he has had, in which he sees Mordred sitting on his throne. Merlin warns Arthur that Mordred is a dangerous man, and that he must be careful.

Mordred arrives in Camelot and quickly begins to plot Arthur's downfall. He seduces Guinevere and convinces her to help him overthrow her husband. Mordred also gains the support of Lancelot (Perceval Landon),one of Arthur's most trusted knights.

Arthur is betrayed by his closest friends and allies, and he is eventually defeated by Mordred in a battle for the throne. Mordred is killed in the battle, but Arthur is mortally wounded.

Before he dies, Arthur gives his sword, Excalibur, to Lancelot and tells him to return it to the Lady of the Lake. Lancelot does as he is told, and Arthur is taken to Avalon, the land of the dead.

Production

Reception

The Battle for Camelot was a critical and commercial failure upon its release. The film was criticized for its slow pacing, lack of action, and uninspired performances. The film also failed to connect with audiences, who were not interested in a musical about the Arthurian legend.

The film has also been parodied in numerous films and television shows, including Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Shrek.
