While working with the CCC, Christianson developed a strong work ethic and a keen interest in firefighting. In 1940, he joined the New York City Fire Department (FDNY),embarking on a career that would forever change his life and the lives of countless others.

The Blitz of London

In 1941, as World War II raged across Europe, Christianson's firefighting skills were put to the ultimate test. He volunteered to join the American Ambulance Corps, a group of civilian volunteers who provided medical aid and assistance to the people of London during the Blitz, a relentless campaign of aerial bombardment by the Nazi Luftwaffe.

For eight harrowing months, Christianson worked tirelessly amidst the chaos and devastation of bombed-out buildings, extinguishing fires, rescuing victims, and administering aid to the injured. His bravery and compassion earned him the respect and admiration of both his fellow volunteers and the grateful citizens of London.

Twice-Week Heroes

Upon returning to New York City in 1942, Christianson resumed his firefighting duties with the FDNY. In 1946, he was assigned to Engine Company 217 in Harlem, a predominantly African American neighborhood that was plagued by poverty and crime.

Appalled by the conditions in Harlem, Christianson and his fellow firefighters at Engine Company 217 resolved to make a difference. They went beyond the call of duty, organizing recreational activities for children, providing assistance to the elderly, and working to improve the overall quality of life in the community.

Their efforts earned them the affectionate nickname "Twice-Week Heroes," as they responded to both fires and community needs with equal dedication. Christianson played a pivotal role in this initiative, becoming a symbol of hope and inspiration for the marginalized residents of Harlem.

Legacy of Service

Frank Christianson's career with the FDNY spanned four decades, during which time he responded to countless fires and emergencies, saving countless lives and making a profound impact on the community. He retired from active firefighting in 1978, but his legacy of service continued long after.

In addition to his work as a firefighter, Christianson was active in numerous civic and community organizations. He served as a board member of the Harlem Boys and Girls Club and the Citizens Committee for New York City, and he was a vocal advocate for social justice and equality.

Frank Christianson passed away on June 24, 2009, at the age of 91. He was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, and his memory continues to inspire generations of firefighters and community activists.
